What are Vertical Gardens?

Vertical Gardens (also known as living walls) are a great solution for those with limited space. Put simply they are gardens that are grown vertically. Patric Blanc, the French Botanist was the originator of the concept and is now the superstar of the vertical garden world. His living walls are fabulous works of art and have inspired many to start growing plants up the wall.

Vertical gardening provides an opportunity for a thriving herb, flower or small vegetable garden to grow in very small urban spaces - both indoors and outside. A lush green sanctuary can be created in gritty hard cities without the need for wide gardens.

Vertical gardening opens up the planting possibilities. No longer are we restricted to the traditional tall and skinny plant range such as conifers or climbers to screen fences. A tapestry of colour, form and texture is now possible in even the smallest of gardens.

Valuable ground space can be left for the children to kick a ball or the parents to host large dinner parties. Perfect for urban living. It is now possible to grow your lettuce and herbs in the kitchen or create a funky tropical living wall in the bedroom.

Please remember all gardens need maintenance and vertical gardens are no different. Plants need adequate water, sun and nutrients to maintain healthy growth. Whilst vertical gardens are fabulous there is nothing worse than a dead 'living wall'. Correct plant selection, maintenance and a good vertical garden system is critical for a happy lush wall garden.

Garden Beet's blog has a whole heap of articles on vertical gardens including window farms - take a look.

Garden Beet also has a reading recommendation to assist with your vertical gardening activities.

Garden Up. Smart Vertical Gardening for Small and Large Spaces
by Susan Morrison and Rebecca Sweet.
This book has had great reviews. It offers some fantastic small garden solutions as well as inspiring gardening ideas. Now we don't like tooting our own horn but some vertical gardens by Garden Beet feature in this book! We were rather chuffed to be included. Placing that aside we now use the book as a reference and find it very useful for ideas.
