Garden planter accessories made from materials headed for landfill is a fairly good use of unwanted materials. Anna and Karen from Tread have been working closely with two artisans in Morocco who produce original and contemporary planters made from old tyres. The tyres are stripped and then creatively handcrafted making each piece unique. Due to the labour involved Anna and Karen pay a higher price for each recycled tyre planter than they would if these were moulded planters. They are more than happy to do so since it supports the local communities and the handmade finish creates a more unique product.
Just don’t use them for anything edible. There is some evidence that old tires can leach chemicals into the soil.
