Bougainvillea is the bold luminous flower that celebrates life even during those hideous steel grey cloudy days. Its a rampant knock out plant. It requires pruning to keep it under control. Young plants may require tip-pinching instead of pruning to help them fill out and grow bushy.
If you get pricked with a bougainvillea it hurts. And you can't just mow over the bastard - thorns are everywhere. They put out random spurs up to 2 inches long. What do you do? Live with it - the flower is a show stopper. Young bougainvillea branches have smaller thorns, and fewer of them. Wear gardening gloves, and avoid reaching your arm into the plant.
Bougainvilleas are flexible. They can be trained in many different ways including as prostrate bougainvilleas.
Bougainvilleas are straightforward plants to grow.
THINGS TO KNOW
1. Frost-free climate but will recover from a light frost.
2. Likes most soil types provided they've got good drainage.
3. Loves full sun - half a day's sun they'll still thrive.
4. Never add too much nitrogen (that will reduce the flower). The key ingredient is potassium or potash. Hibiscus fertiliser is perfect
Bromeliad is the show stopper of the vertical garden plants. Indoor in Australia they can flower for up to 6 months. A tall standing brightly coloured roset flower They grow better and get better stronger colours in lower light levels. The most important thing to keep in mind is to keep the cone topped up with water
In the wild Guzmanias grow in tropical rainforests up in the tree tops so they do not require a large amount of potting Mix or repotting (the mix is really just in there to keep the plant stable. When the plant has no flower there is a cone that stays full of water, this pool makes a home for frogs and other creatures in the wild. Out of this cone comes the flower.
You can give a liquid feed to your Guzmania every few months, mix up a dilute amount and pour it over the top because it will take in the nutrients through the cone, make sure there is no calcium in the feed.
Once your guzmanias flower has finished (4-6 months) cut it out as low as you can and the plant will develop pups around the base which will overtake the original plant and next time you will get a multiflowering plant.
Epipremnum aureum also known as Money Plant or Pothos is a trailing low maintenance indoor vertical garden plant.
Light: Low light to bright light. No direct sun. Although pothos will tolerate low light, it will have more leaves and better variegation if kept in bright light.
Temp: Average room humidity. 16-27°C
Soil: They will thrive in nutrient rich soil, but do almost as well in nutrient poor soil.
Water: Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. It will not tolerate soggy soil. Yellow leaves are a sign of overwatering.
Habitat: Solomon Islands
Tip: Feed every 2 weeks spring through fall with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted by half. In winter, feed monthly.
Pot Size: 26 cm
Category: Trailing – Provides good coverage of vertical garden pockets or buckets. A useful plant to cover edges of a vertical garden (especially when the vertical garden does not have a frame or is not recessed into a wall).
Hatiora or drunken bones is a fabulous trailing vertical garden plant. The plant is fabulous for creating artful arrangements in contemporary planters. The plant we sell is is known as Hatiora salicornioides or Rhipsalis salicornioides. It is made of many-branched stems that are up to 60 cm in length. It can be located indoors and outdoors. Likes light shade.
Kalanchoe is a fabulous vertical garden filler plant. Easy to grow and can be ignored once planted in your vertical garden.
Monstera deliciosa is a dramatic low maintenance indoor vertical garden plant. Keep out of direct sunlight. Flowering is rare when grown indoors.
It grows best between the temperatures of 20–30 °C (68–86 °F) and requires high humidity and shade.
Sun: Bright indirect light for this monster! If you have it indoors be sure to keep it 5-8 feet from a window or door.
Temp: It grows best between the temperatures of 20–30 °C (68–86 °F) and requires high humidity and shade. Growth ceases below 10 °C (50 °F) and it is killed by frost. In the coastal zones of Sicily, especially in the Palermo area, where it is called "zampa di leone" ("lion's paw"), it is often cultivated outdoors. In ideal conditions it flowers about three years after it is planted.
Soil: Like we always say a well-drained organic mix! However, with Monstera be sure to have a peat based potting media (or add some peat to the mix you usually use).
Water: Put Monstera on a regular watering schedule. Be sure to allow the soil or media to dry out between each watering. More water during the growing season and less during the winter and fall.
Habitat: Native to Central America, these tropical foliage plants have huge oblong, heart shaped leaves with holes like Swiss cheese. Indoors this plant has to be attached to objects to grow up.
Tip: Once you find a place for this plant, be sure not to move it too much, for they do not like to be moved. If lower leaves begin to yellow it is probably from one of two things: too much water or not enough light. Note: on the poisonous houseplant list- be careful around children and pets.
Pot Size 20cm and 14cm
Category: Thriller – Used as focal points and to create a dynamic visual composition.

Senecio rowleyanus or Mother of Pearl Vertical Garden Plant. Fabulous trailing plant. It grows best in bright light . When growing the plant needs around 22 C. During its dormancy, however, you’ll need to provide cooler conditions, generally somewhere between 10-13 C. This plant is drought tolerant, surviving long periods without water. Watering too often can increase the chances of root rot.
Note: Mildly Toxic- take care when growing in homes with pets or small children.
A mix of plants suitable for a vertical garden located in the shade. A plant mix that varies in texture and colour to create depth and interest.
In Australia this plant mix would be suitable for a south facing wall. The plants could also tolerate light morning sun. But definitely not strong sun. These plants will require watering every day during really hot summer days. You may want to consider installing drip irrigation. But hand watering is equally effective. Garden Beet's vertical gardens in Melbourne are all hand watered.
We sell a Large Vertical Garden Plant Mix and a Standard Vertical Garden Plant Mix. They are both the same price and are the same plants. The only difference between the two mixes is the pot size of the plants.
Most systems only require the standard mix. Wally Pockets however need larger plants to create a fuller appearance. We therefore include less plants in the Wally mix but the plants we supply are larger than the standard mix.
